Course Overview

 

               Advanced Placement World History is primarily offered to sophomores, but it is also available to juniors and

   senior’s .This course is designed to challenge highly motivated students to understand the global processes and history

   that shaped human development for the last 10,000 years. Students who work at meeting this challenge will have the

   opportunity to earn college credit during their high school years. However, the purpose of this class extends beyond an

   understanding of world history and the possibility for college credit. The nature of this course provides high school

   students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills that will form a strong foundation for continuing college

   preparation courses in high school and survey level college courses.

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  •  to allow students to participate in a college level survey course.

  •  to prepare students to pass the National AP World History Exam

  •  to study world history by using a mixed chronological and thematic approach.

  •  to understand the influence of geography upon history.

  •  to see cause-and-effect relationships over time and across civilizations.

  •  to understand similarities and differences between and among world civilizations.

  •  to recognize major changes in societies and turning points in world history.

  •  to understand the difference between primary and secondary sources.

  •  to improve thesis development and writing skills for college curriculums.

  •  to encourage interest and understanding of global lifestyles, views and cultures.

  •  to recognize, understand and evaluate Point of View (POV) (Bias)

 

PROGRAM RECOMMENDATIONS

 

  The school recommends that students earn at least a B in level honors courses or an A in a regular social studies course

  when a student elects the AP course. (Per  county policy):  All students in this class will take the National AP

  World History Exam.
